Choosing CAD Tools as a Hardware Startup Without Blowing Your Early Budget

If you are a startup building a physical product, chances are choosing CAD tools is already on your list of problems to solve. You know you need proper design tools. You also know your budget is tight. And somewhere between building your first prototype and pitching investors, it is tempting to make do with whatever software you can access right now.

For many early-stage hardware startups, that decision feels practical in the moment. But it often creates problems that show up later, when fixing them is far more expensive. If you’re a founder or designer actively looking for CAD tools and wondering how to balance cost, capability, and long-term scalability, you’re not alone.

The early-stage CAD dilemma most hardware startups face

In the early days of a startup, speed matters. You want to test ideas quickly, prove feasibility, and show progress. In other words, you need to move fast so you don’t miss out on investors and other opportunities.

That is why many teams start with tools that are:

  • Free or very low cost
  • Easy to access without contracts
  • Good enough for a first concept

On paper, this looks sensible. You can worry about any potential issues later on. However, somethings things move faster than expected, and this approach often leads to issues as your team begins to grow.

What happens when you “make do” with CAD tools?

Startups that rely on improvised CAD setups often run into:

  • Messy and inconsistent files
  • Designs that are hard to version or reuse
  • Collaboration becomes messy
  • Manufacturing handoff takes more effort than expected
  • Extra rework when moving towards manufacturing

These problems rarely block you on day one. They appear when you start scaling and you begin collaborating internally and externally and preparing for production. At that point, switching tools or rebuilding models is no longer just a technical decision. It becomes a business risk.

Why CAD choices matter more than most founders expect

CAD is not just about drawing parts. It becomes the backbone of how your product is developed, improved, and manufactured.

Your CAD setup affects:

  • How fast you can iterate
  • How easily others can understand your design
  • How prepared you are for manufacturing
  • How credible your product data looks to partners and suppliers

For hardware startups, this is especially important because these things compound quickly. Starting with the right foundation reduces friction and cost as your company grows.

What early-stage startups actually need from CAD tools

As a founder, you’re probably not chasing advanced features or complex workflows at this time.

What you probably want is:

  • Professional tools without heavy upfront cost
  • Flexibility as the company evolves
  • Software that supports both prototyping and production
  • Access to help when things get complicated

This is where many startups feel stuck. They assume professional tools are out of reach until later.

Choosing the Right CAD tool for Your Hardware Startup

The SOLIDWORKS for Startups program is specifically designed for early-stage hardware companies and removes many of these barriers. This three-year support program created for young companies developing their own physical products. The idea is straightforward.

Startups get access to industry standard design tools early, without heavy upfront investment or long-term commitments. This allows teams to build on a solid foundation from the beginning, instead of fixing problems down the line when they can have a bigger impact.

What the SOLIDWORKS for Startups program includes:

For eligible startups, the program provides access to tools and support that are normally out of reach at this stage.

This includes:

  • Up to five seats of SOLIDWORKS licences
  • Access to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and relevant roles
  • Local technical support from PLM Group
  • Discounted on onboardings and training
  • Access to service plans that help teams actually learn and use the tools effectively

More than just software access, the program focuses on helping startups build a solid product development foundation.

Is this program relevant for your startup?

The SOLIDWORKS for Startups program is designed for early-stage companies that are:

  • A new company, under five years old
  • Developing your own physical product
  • Under one million in revenue or funding
  • Not currently a SOLIDWORKS customer

This applies across many industries, including consumer products, industrial hardware, and even software companies with a physical component such as a device or enclosure.

PLM Group as an innovation partner for startups

PLM Group is Dassault Systèmes’ largest partner in the Nordics and the Baltics. Within the SOLIDWORKS for Startups program, the role of PLM Group goes beyond providing licences.

The goal is to support startups with:

  • Local expertise
  • Practical guidance on workflows
  • Help getting real value from the tools
  • Support as products and teams scale

For many early-stage startups, that local support is just as important as the software itself.

Choosing CAD tools as a startup does not have to be a compromise

Many founders assume they must choose between:

  • Professional tools they cannot afford
  • Free tools that will not scale

For eligible startups, that trade off does not have to exist. Starting with proper CAD tools early can save time, reduce rework, and make growth smoother later on. The key is knowing what options are available and choosing a setup that fits both your current stage and your plans for the future.

Long-term engineering success rarely happens alone Long-term engineering success rarely happens alone.

At Schur Automation, building advanced packaging systems means constantly refining how their engineers work from tools to workflows.

Good engineering tools matter. But good conversations matter just as much.

That’s why they’ve worked closely with us since 2004.

“The team at PLM Group listen to us. They help with both big and small things. And when challenges come up, we know we have a partner to turn to,” says Dorte Jensen, Technical Assistant at Schur Automation.

A Nonlinear Analysis with Abaqus/Explicit 🍝🍷 Trad A Nonlinear Analysis with Abaqus/Explicit 🍝🍷

Traditionally, SIMULIA Abaqus has been used to simulate fast dynamic phenomena. Typical applications are car crashes, drop tests, and explosion loads.

In this video, we performed a very nonlinear analysis with large displacements, numerous contacts, and impact loads with the Abaqus/Explicit Solver that's available in every Abaqus license.

A few notes about the analysis:
♣️ The cards are modelled using elastic shell elements
♣️ The surface of the table and the ball are rigid bodies
♣️ Applied loads are gravity and the initial velocity of the ball
♣️ Contacts between parts are modeled using the General Contact Functionality
♣️ The coefficient of friction is 0.3

Additionally, the Explicit Solver is effective in studying slower quasi-static nonlinear events. Complicated contact interactions require a lot of experience and tricks from the user to get the solution to converge when using the traditional Abaqus/Implicit solver. In cases like this, the Explicit solver can be the right choice as it is easier to use and faster.

If you ever encounter problematic contact cases, this is worth a try and we will gladly guide you forward 🙏🏼
